Desktop License

The Desktop license is calculated based on the license owner’s company size – in other words the number of employees – and not on how many user eventually install the font software. As not everyone is working full-time you can cumulate the percentages to 100% jobs and go with an approximate number for the metrics.

  • The Desktop license grants the right to install the purchased font files on all workstations including desktop computers, laptops and servers. The amount of devices and their geographical location is not limited, but all users must belong and/or work for the same organisation or company.
  • If you are an individual designer or design studio purchasing fonts on behalf of your client or a third party, you are not allowed to use the fonts in other projects for unlicensed clients or yourself.
  • With a Desktop license you are allowed to convert licensed fonts to paths or pixels and create logo(types) that way. If you are to legally register or trademark a logo based on the original typeface design though, you have to purchase an additional trademark license for the font(s) used. In this case please contact → txt@mztype.ch.
  • When purchasing a Desktop license, the amount of employees is to be set at checkout. If the amount significantly changes over time, the difference has to be purchased additionally, according to the self-check term under {3.2 Updates}.
  • With a Desktop license you are permitted to store security copies of the font files, if inaccessible to external parties and to share copies of the fonts with all parties working at and/or for your company, including design studios, prepress, printing entities, and others.
  • Desktop fonts are provided in OTF format and may not be converted into other formats and/or used online.

Necessary information at check-out:

1.0 Preamble

This End User License Agreement (EULA) is a contract between the licensee/s (“you”, customer and/or license owner) and the supplier (MzType, Marc Zenhäusern) for the purchased fonts, and legally binds all parties involved to the terms and conditions stated in this document.

By purchasing, downloading, installing, and/or using MzType’s fonts, you acknowledge that you have read and accepted the terms of this agreement. 2.0 Definitions

2.1 Licensee

  • The license owner is the end user creating or using the output generated or designed with purchased font files.
  • The customer is the user purchasing font files on behalf of itself or a third party. In some cases the customer and license owner are the same entity.

2.2 Supplier
MzType is the type foundry of Marc Zenhäusern in Bern, Switzerland.

2.3 Typefaces and fonts
A typeface is the underlying visual design and consists of a particular set of glyphs (an alphabet and its corresponding accessories such as numerals, symbols and punctuation) that share a common design.
A font is an implementation of a specific style of the typeface, for a specific use case and medium.

2.4 Copyright and right of use
A digital font is a small software and licensed as such. Purchasing a font license grants the rights to use the font according to this EULA and its terms and conditions.
A licensee never owns the purchased font, but the right to use it alone. MzType / Marc Zenhäusern remains the only copyright owner. Any and all rights not expressly granted in this agreement including intellectual property rights are reserved to Marc Zenhäusern and MzType.

3.0 General Terms

Upon full payment MzType permits the licensee the non-exclusive, non-transferable, non-sub-licensable right to use the purchased font files according to its accompanying license, subject to the terms and conditions of this EULA.
Important: everything under {3.0 General Terms} applies to all individual licenses.

3.1 Refunds
All sales are final: once fonts are purchased from mztype.ch they are non-returnable and non-refundable.
If the font files are technically defective in any way, MzType will review – and if necessary – replace the files within 14 (fourteen) days after the purchase.

3.2 Updates
All licenses are based on specific metrics and by accepting this EULA you agree to keep your licenses up to date by comparing them at least once a year. If the results have significantly changed over time, the difference has to be purchased additionally. In case of mistrust MzType is allowed to contact the license owner and request current data.

3.3 Limitations
You are not authorised to sublicense, sell, lend, or lease the font software and may not convert, modify, or rename the original font files under any circumstances.
This includes:

  • open the original font files in an editing software in order to reveal its drawing, structure or code.
  • use the original font files to create a derivative or modified version of it, including creating characters for alphabets and languages not covered by the typeface in its current form, or designing a custom version of the typeface. Subsetting the character set or features in the font to reduce file size is allowed.

Any promotion of violence and/or discrimination with the use of MzType Typefaces is prohibited and the use in any form of political campaign or religious context needs to be authorised by MzType beforehand.

3.4 Customisation
A customised version of a typeface, additional glyphs or modifications to single glyphs can be created upon request.

3.5 Warranty
Font software is always used with third party devices/software and underlying ever-changing circumstances. Font files may therefore behave differently sometimes or not display 100% accurately. Although testing thoroughly, MzType does not and cannot warrant any performance or results the licensee may experience through use of the font software.

If you’re happy with a purchased typeface, please feel free to credit MzType in the imprint or colophon of your project.
